Terral Tinto - Sumarroca

Terral D.O Penedès

Blend of spices

A coupage of our own vines, with complexity, structure and elegance provided primarily by Cabernet Franc and Syrah, together with a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vines are in the Santa Creu section of the Sumarroca estate. The soil there has very low levels of organic matter, with high levels of limestone and deep gravel deposits.

The 2015 harvest began with torrential rains in autumn, just after finishing the harvest. Thereafter the winter was very light and extremely dry. Only the snowfall in February helped clean the vineyards. The beginning of spring was cool, especially at night, but when May arrived the temperatures rose to extremes never seen before (1 to 2 degrees higher than previously recorded) and the heat continued during June and July, always accompanied by a sharp drought, with some light but well distributed rainfall. The last rain before the harvest was in mid-June. Temperatures were back to normal in August, which improved the quality of the ripening of the grapes, and some rain in late August ensured the grapes matured optimally.

Cherry colour, purple around the edges. Intense bouquet of mature fruit such as blackberry and blueberry, together with cedar and spices. Well structured and balanced on the palate with concentrated mature fruit flavours and hints of spices. Long finish.

Separate wine-making processes for each variety. Fermentation at 26ºC and maceration for at least 12 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 20ºC. The wine is then aged in new and second vintage oak barrels, most of them French, for 12 months to ensure the right tannin balance.
